One would think this to be an easy topic to write about, but for me it's a very complex issue. Being an author that doesn't write from the head (intellectual writing), I have a hard time expressing what inspires me because it's such a complex process. For me I will simply be going about my business when I become suddenly overwhelmed with some emotional experience, that in all honesty writes itself. I find that I write more from my passions and emotional experiences than from some intellectual capacity that I have full control over. As a result I am often told by readers that they experienced the very emotional event that inspired the writing, as if those emotions or passions were speaking with a voice of their own. I'm not the kind of author that can simply sit down and write which explains why I rarely enter poetry contest's. It's more of an "in the heat of the moment thing for me." You might say that in some way I suffer for the sake of the art (through the experience), which throughout history has been the hallmark of fine art, the artist suffering for the sake of the work. Honestly I wouldn't have it any other way.

Ah, I am very similar Rick. I find that the best poems come off the top of my head, I may be riding a bus and suddenly find myself softly whispering a poem under my breathe, then quickly rush home to write it down. My "Emily McCartney" poem was that way as well, though I was in my room when inspiration hit. I also find that my best poems come from having my Heartbroken, for that is when I feel the most passion and sorrow, and can write to my best abilities. I can try and force writing out of me for contests and such, but I feel they always pale in comparison to the ones which come from the heart and soul.

Caitie you are so right, sometimes I think heartache is the mother of poetry.

Rick, Mostly my poems come straight off m,y head and I do very little to workshop them. Others, especially those that I am thinking of sending out for publication, I attend a poetry workshop at a library or use my computer.. I get published more times than not, so I must be doing something right! ~Davidf

David, Rick passed away a few years back. He was a wonderful man, artist, author and musician. He was loyal to the site for a very long time. I know he would be proud of all of us, and our writing skills. =)
