Why'd you start writing? I think for me it was because I always likened rap to poetry and I've been a fan of Edgar Allen Poe stories since I was even younger. When I started writing raps and learned some of the techniques and intricacies it made me more interested in poetry. So I came here to learn more and share my writings.
Now what about you? If you don't know or remember why you started, tell us what keeps you writing.

I started writing when I was in 5th grade. It was an escape from life for me. Christina Rossetti, Emily Dickinson, and Sylvia Plath are a few of my favs! Life still keeps me writing. I think poetry is a way to cleanse the soul and get emotions out!

I agree. It's like an artistic way to release your emotions that you can't say or don't fully understand sometimes for me. I also like Lord Byron's poems but I think I'll have to check the work from those people too.

Writing for me seems to have been part of life since I was small ...I used to make up stories and loved to read as a teenager I got into mysteries like the famous four , Agatha Christie, Edgar allen Poe, and I love the so called dime detective novels ...so writing has seemed a natural part of my life for many years ...and hopefully many to come

I am not a specialist in poetry writing. I only do it when there are some good words or sentences pass through my mind and some power made me to write them down

That's how I am too but I'm trying to change it. Unless inspiration strikes me it's almost impossible for me to write poetry. You should check out the poetry challenge on here.

I was about 10, and couldn't afford a gift, not even a card for my uncle. So I made a card with my poem in it and my sister did the artwork. I did the same thing for cousins until they were about 20 (I figured they were old enough by then), but they still wanted to know what happened to the homemade cards. By then I was writing on a bunch of topics, humor, romantic, nature, fantasy, philosophical and religious poetry. Recently I have dabbled into science fiction poetry, with a tinge of humor. (Guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks). No more cards though... ~Davidf
