I received a letter from the League of American Poets stating that they wish to publish one of my works of poetry in their Anthology called Expressions. I need advice.
Am I supposed to be compensated for being published? If I agree to its publication, does that signify that it is no longer able to be published anywhere else? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The League of American Poets is a scam,
ARTICLE FROM THE NET Scammed by: League of American Poets
Details:
Today, my boyfriend received a letter from The League of American Poets. We were so excited that he was getting published! But then I started asking questions:
1) Why were they asking HIM to edit his own work? I'm an editor, and I make, not take, suggestions.
2) Why wasn't this book available in stores?
3) Why did HE have to pay for his own book?
Thankfully, we did some research. I bet if we were to purchase this book, he would not only be featured on the first page, but would be Editor's Choice, perhaps even nominated for Poet of the Year!
You can try calling them as I did at 410-602-0384. No one will answer, but an, "I'm on to you and will not be scammed by you" message will safice.

What happens they will just ask if you wanna buy a book, you don't have to though. You poem will be published. but there scam is they want you to buy things by hyping you up by giving out fake awards, offering seminars which you have to pay to go and accept the awards. Things like that. but your poem will still be published regardless if you do not buy a thing. or if you want just decline, email them. They can't publish anything without your concent and because your work is copyrighted.

Yes they are major scammers. Her is a site called Silent Whispers that has a monthly literary journal. They are always accepting submissions and they pay authors for there work if they publish it. they will ask you to submit a brief bio, you poems, pic and will feature you on there literary ezine on the authors page if they accept you for there monthly. Check out the site, click the submissions button and read submissions for poetry. I myself have published with them, and will be in upcoming issues. You'll see me on the authors page under Kevin Brian Wright. I made about 30 dollars a poem, which isn't to bad compared to just sending your poem in and it just being published. At least you will make a couple dollars. Also you keep all the rights and yo will be able to still publish your poem anywhere else you'd like, it is stated in the contract. www.jmswm.com/

Hi Jesmina...
Sorry I am a little late on this one. There are indeed many scammers out there. If a publisher is for real and like your work, they will published it without cost to the poet. Not all publishers will pay you to publish it tho. That does not mean they are trying to scam you.
It depends what the writer is looking for, to become a published poet or to get paid for your writings?
If you maintain the full rights to your poem, you may publish it again in your own book. Or submit it else where after I think 6 months? Something I would have to review, but I believe that is correct.

Hi Jesmina... If a publisher is for real and like your work, they will published it without cost to the poet. Not all publishers will pay you to publish it tho. If you maintain the full rights to your poem, you may publish it again in your own book. Hello Joe, As you are a publisher and for didactic purposes to everyone... it would be better to distinguish between the copyright and the edition contract. The copyright gives some rights to the author such as the right to be considered the author of the work and the right to be quoted as the author of the work. The edition contract concerns the relationship, also economic ones, between the author and the own publisher. The copyright and the edition contract are two different things. However the most important thing, for a starting author, is not to pay ANY MONEY in order to be published. The author MUST NOT PAY ANYTHING to be published. I am curious to know how the edition contracts are there in the US. Thank you for your attention... Dario

I agree with Joe having been published many times myself. When you submit to a publication which is an anthology, you probably won't be compensated for your work, what you will accomplish is to become a published poet, and this is a goal we all share. Your work should appear in the anthology as copyrighted by you and you should be able to retain exclusive rights to your work. The following is my opinion only, but if you are selected for publication, you should at least have the offer to purchase the edition at cost, rather than retail. I was able to purchase a case of my last anthology at cost and make $3.50 per copy selling them to friends.
