I am inspired by many different things. I have to admit, I'm most inspired by people and emotions, and by studying people. I can decipher and read and abstract human love, suffering and psychosis and put them in words really well. I have a harder time with details dealing with objects and descriptions of say buildings and other objects, but that is starting to finally come. The more attention I pay to the details of objects etc. the better I am at writing and describing them, and I mix them with other things I understand better and tie them together.
I listen to a LOT of music when I write poetry. I listen to a lot of Radiohead - which is probably why my writing has become more odd, abstract but pleasing in the last year or so. Sometimes I like to listen to something really soft and beautiful like Fiona Apple, or sometimes when I'm anguished or angry I listen to some Type O Negative and that helps balance my writing.
Someone mentioned this as their inspiration, and I have to say, its become mine too, as of late. Reading the paper or news etc. Like in my local newspaper online right now, just today, there is so much homophobic crap that so many regular people are spewing.. and I tell you I'm very close to writing something very long about that issue. And my ~ God Hates Prejudice ~ poem I shared here was based on what was going on with Fred Phelps - though I had wanted to writing something to counter the "God Hates Fags" comment even before I had heard about Phelps. But yes, issues get my attention, so I write about them a lot.
The great and evil thing we call ~ Love ~ has inspired me much, as it has with every poet.
Sometimes when I see something that parallels something in my personal life or past, I am likely to write something about it. Either as a confessional comparison or as a mock piece to myself.
Going for walks helps inspire writing and yes, changing scenery does too. On vacation I went to an art museum and that really inspired some poetry, so much history all in one building.
Reading really inspires the ink. Usually from stories. But I've found, since I've been a member here, and reading other peoples varying poetry styles, its helped improve my own writing. So thanks guys! And yes, movies inspire poetry too. Or like some of the other things I read, trying a new style might help inspire other new poetry etc.
Though the ONE thing I say that has kept me from having virtually zero writers block in over a year from now, is I usually write something, most everyday. You keep the juices flowing and if you are a good writer or really in love with poetry and expression, it can really improve your writing. Write something everyday.
Ok, that was long, I could have made it longer. Lots of everything inspires me.
