Here is what I do: * Read others poetry or attend a local Poetry Reading * Keep a pad and paper next to my bed, also take it out with me and note observations (person on bus, activity of a bird, mother with child…etc) * Experiment with a new style, concept, or subject * Poetry Games: I realize Poetry.com is up for debate but I really find this game helps me get the juices flowing poetry.com/Poetry_IN_Motion/MagCon.asp I don’t play it for the contest, just the inspirational exercise! There are many poetry games like this on-line, and books too! [glow=red,2,300]KEEP WRITING[/glow]

Some previous conversations have happened regarding this subject (Here they are) Well personally i started writing when i was really depressed and had a past history of hearing voices (thus my inspiration) also, ive had several bad experiences which kinda get me in the mood to write somthing down, so i was just cruising around on the internet and found some gothic dark type poetry and i liked it alot so i just sat down and typed one out.... so id have to say its a mixture of all of those, not dreams for me, but thinking of that might give me an idea for a new poem.... oh well, dosent matter, i like to write, calms me down .... well thats what inspires me to write... what about you trina? what inspires you to write? Well it's always been a combination of all these (mood, experiences, observations, dreams, and other poetry) for me. I see or feel something and the words just come. Usually half the poem is already conceived long before it hits paper. Then it's just a matter of quickly writing it down and editing it before it's gone to the sea of the forgotten. Alot of my best work was written in a matter of 5 minutes. Sometimes a poem will get an additional edit, many months after the initial write...after the emotion has long passed and the poem can be looked at more objectionably Anyways...that's just me! ;D

I know this may sound really odd to anyone but in my opinion the best way to get inspired to write is to be unhealthy about it... Im not saying that the ideas like going on a walk or dreaming are bad, im just saying that for some like myself it does not help... in my opinion the best way to be healthy about doing poetry or getting along with life is to get down in the grit of it.... i prefer to write "gothic" poetry and i probably will until i actually get inspired to write about how good life is.... (psh probably wont write about anything good till i actually find someone worth the time to actually care about) but the best way for me to write is to think about sad stuff... sounds basic but it works... like think about your dog who got hit by some unrelenting jerk who only had a vendetta against you so he ran over your dog... or perhaps that you will never really find that special someone.... think of work the next day.... think of school, think of how you will spend the next SEVERAL years going to scool, you hate it but its forced on you like an enima.....was that inspiration i heard knocking? no. it was only the mothers of the children i traumatize with my views.... but really.... i get down into the grit... think about how your girlfriend dumped you, or you got beat up by your best friend... or just how miserable life really really is... sheesh, this is worse than goth poetry... Anyway, thats just my key to success.... but you really gotta be in the mood to write most of all... the best way to achieve this is to tell yourself that there is nothing you can do to relieve it but to get it off your chest... and thats what this place is really for isnt it? to tell us, your friends, you e-family your problems and trials and tribulations so that we can resolve your pains and worries... puts a tear in your eye dosent it? no, it makes me cry! a tear in my eye would hurt like bloody hades.... get it tear? tear?.... nah... forget it Love to all (god i havent said that in a while) Skulldoor

I suffer from bi-polar (maniac depression). I have been suffering with severe depression as far back as I can remember. I have also had many traumatic events to happen to me in my life. Writing is my signature, my proof of my existance (sometimes lol). As was never really a normal kid when it come to reading and watching television. Sure I watched cartoons and still do but I was into documentaries and the news. I would read biographies and classic literature such as: Charles Dickens, Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, to name a few. But my very first interest in reading came from the bible. My grandmother would read her bible before she went to work and before she went to bed. I have been writing since I could hold a pen or pencil in my hand. I got my first type writer when I was six. So yea I am a class A nerd hehehehehe but I have learned to embrace my sorrow and use it to flourish my depth in my writing. I appreciate such a website as this it helps me to connect with other writers and still stay anonymous!

Thanks for all you tips, I just write about current feelings. I'm only 20 - still learning lots of new things every day and sometimes major new things... like the pain of a broken heart!

Tom, That is one pain that is never fully learned, but time has a way of either dulling or numbing the pain, but writing on the other hand is one absolute way to help either heal the pain or deal with it in the deepest level of the human soul!!!! And Prayer!
