okay everyone, the general idea is great but i got to thinking that people could just like start up conversations and talk about just stuff, poetry, feelings and whatnot, but this is only one mans idea gimme your thoughts on the idea (and yes, this is indeed a conversation starter to those who are like myself and need an ingraved invitation) but i digress, degress, whatever take a load off and spill your mind over here -Skulls-

Ok..here is the question of the day
What inspires a poet to write?
mood, experiences, observations, dreams, other poetry?

Well personally i started writing when i was really depressed and had a past history of hearing voices (thus my inspiration) also, ive had several bad experiences which kinda get me in the mood to write somthing down, so i was just cruising around on the internet and found some gothic dark type poetry and i liked it alot so i just sat down and typed one out.... so id have to say its a mixture of all of those, not dreams for me, but thinking of that might give me an idea for a new poem.... oh well, dosent matter, i like to write, calms me down .... well thats what inspires me to write... what about you trina? what inspires you to write?

Well it's always been a combination of all these (mood, experiences, observations, dreams, and other poetry) for me. I see or feel something and the words just come. Usually half the poem is already conceived long before it hits paper. Then it's just a matter of quickly writing it down and editing it before it's gone to the sea of the forgotten. Alot of my best work was written in a matter of 5 minutes.
Sometimes a poem will get an additional edit, many months after the initial write...after the emotion has long passed and the poem can be looked at more objectionably
Anyways...that's just me! ;D

i get inspired lots of ways, laughter, pain, by smells even songs play a great deal in my life generally and sometimes something just hits me over the head and i have to rush for pen and paper. but there those words or phrases that creep up on you and stay in your mind for days, weeks, years even until you exorcise them on paper. i must tell you that my mind had gone on some kind of hiatus???(is that even a word?) untill i came across the junction. i dont know for how long but as least i got inspiration from you guys- thanks

I really liked Sani's reasoning...I think sometimes it's just this absolute need to do SOMETHING about feelings/thoughts/dreams whatever, and poetry is abstract enough to capture things that don't naturally flow into stories or conversations...you can say things with poetry without explicitly pouring your story out to someone. Personally, my inspiration is usually an intense emotion that I don't feel I can adequately express to anyone else, such as frustration, loss, confusion, etc. Or songs, yes. I'm sure I unintentionally use lines from songs in my poems all the time.
